Violet

Violet's Story ~
We first met Violet when she was a rambunctious puppy. Her home was with people who lived just down the way, but they chose to ignore her, so she came to our house to play. When she arrived, she'd have something in her mouth to offer as a gift. It didn't matter if it was a stick, an old shoe, or a  gum wrapper, she always had something to offer.

She played with Leroy a lot and they were the best of friends. One day Violet arrived at our house, with a little black and white dog in tow. Where he came from, we didn't have a clue.
Violet managed to visit us each day, always bringing her newfound friend along to play, too.

One day we saw smoke coming from across the way and it didn't take long to realize that our neighbor's house was on fire. We also knew that they were not at home.
I told my husband that Violet was in the house. He said to me that they never allowed Violet in the house, so why would she be there now? I knew that Violet would have raced to our house, had she been free to do so.

I tried to go up to the front door of the house to see if Violet would come to me and thus get her out of harms way. The firemen told me to stay back. Violet was indeed in the house and she died there.

We were thankful that she died of smoke inhalation and not of the burning fire itself. A fireman brought Violet's body out of the house and we told them that we would take her home with us.

When Violet's family arrived, they asked if they should take Violet's body to the landfill or just put her in the garbage can. I felt as though I would be sick that they could even think something like that!
We told them that we would bury Violet in our backyard and they agreed.

Violet's only attention and love came from us. She had become like our own. Violet had brought Little Bit to us for a specific reason. Maybe because she knew she wouldn't be there for us much longer. We certainly do miss her!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;

Softly the leaves of memory fall,
Gently I gather and treasure them all,
Unseen, unheard, you are always near,
Still loved, still missed, so very dear.

No length of time can take away,
My thoughts of you from day to day,
Whatever else I fail to do,
I never fail to think of you.
